It made me want to change the channel on the TV. Dec, am 5. Porter Wagoner had has? Dec, pm 6. Not all that important but Porter Wagoner visited my home many times when I was a very little lad in the mid to late '60's.
I never really knew why because my Dad died when I was young. But, I recently found out why he visited when my aunt relayed some stories She's in her mid-eighties now. Evidently Porter asked my Dad on several occasions to be a guitar player with him when he was on the road.
He would come by one time with Jean Shepard and Mom would fix a big spread and the grownups would talk for hours. Now for the "funny" part. I never saw a guitar in my father's hands! According to my Aunt, dad was concerned that he would be on the road so much that he not be around to raise me properly. So he never picked up a guitar again. What a sacrifice. I wonder what he would say to me today when I asked him to jam with me and my mando. I think he would be pleased. As for the cross from Bluegrass to Country I think you are right.
Dad only allowed true old timey bluegrass in the house. He liked Duffy but did not like some of his experimentation. He liked the Dobro, but nothing electric or hawaiian. That may be another reason he did not go with Porter.
Dec, pm 7. Great story! I would suspect your Dad is somewhere still watching over you - and if I know dad's Dec, pm 8. Wow, thanks all for the great information and personal stories on Porter. The shows had a friendly, informal feel, with Wagoner trading jokes with band members frequently during songs and exchanging banter with Parton and Howser.
In , Dolly Parton's song "I Will Always Love You", written about her professional break from Wagoner, went to number one on the country music charts. Though Parton's departure caused some animosity on both sides, the two reconciled in the late s and appeared together a number of times in the following years; Parton inducted Wagoner into the Country Music Hall of Fame in On July 14, , he underwent surgery for an abdominal aneurysm. Wagoner was honored on May 19, at the Grand Ole Opry for both his 50 years of membership and his 80th birthday.
On June 5, , Wagoner released his final album called Wagonmaster. The album was produced by Marty Stuart for the Anti- label. The album received the best reviews of Wagoner's career and briefly charted on the country charts; a music video was also produced of one of the tracks, a cover of Johnny Cash 's "Committed to Parkview". He toured during the summer of to promote the album, including a late-July appearance on Late Show with David Letterman.
Wagoner was married twice, to Velma Johnson for less than a year in ; and then to Ruth Olive Williams from to , though they separated 20 years before the divorce. He was survived by his three children, Richard, Denise and Debra. Until his final illness, Wagoner appeared regularly on the Grand Ole Opry and toured actively. He died from lung cancer [6] in Nashville on October 28, , with his family and Dolly Parton at his side. This doesn't happen every day! In , Oprah stopped by Dolly's Variety show Dolly!
In the mid-'80s, Dolly had seen a tabloid story claiming that she had "fallen in love" with pro-wrestler Hulk Hogan. Dolly poked fun at the rumors with spoof song "Headlock on My Heart," and a fake wedding on her variety show. It was all in good fun though, Dolly has been happily married to Carl Dean since Dolly received her first of two stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame! Full of surprises, Dolly was joined by a parrot on her show Dolly!
Though it really shouldn't be all that shocking considering the singer's love of animals. The muppet appeared on Dolly's show in , and the two sang a duet with surprisingly similar hairstyles. The glamorous songstress looks almost unrecognizable in a brown wig and faux-braces during a sketch for Dolly! Another expected guest on Dolly! Talk about a country music power photo. Leaning in for a hug here, Dolly actually made an appearance on Bob Hope's Christmas special, where she played a reindeer in a skit alongside Bob.
Dolly opened the park in and it's still running today! Dolly smiles with Comedian Joan Rivers. I know she would want us all to keep smiling. And I know we always will when we think of her. Why License? Downloads Testimony News More Info. New user?
