The more you tell us the more we can help. The COA sticker shows that the item has a valid individual licence applied, but the restore disks are all basicly VLK versions tied to the manufacturer eg: dell, HP etc. I wondered about that, and maybe that is the answer, but it seems to me that I would normally have to enter the Product Key at some point. Having rebuilt more dells from the cd than I care to count, I can tell you that when using a dell OS installation cd, the product key is built into the image and therefore automated.
One of the nice little features of the Dell CDs I have an older laptop that came with Vista Ultimate when I got it. I've reinstalled several times and never had to activate. Used the cd on one of my PC's and it wont activate, but it also wont stop me from using it It's been a long time since I reinstalled XP from a disk, but I recalled having to enter the key. Maybe I'm recalling wrong.
As for Vista, well, that's what it came with so that what I used. It actually isn't that bad, even on a netbook. It's usable. It's just like my servers. The only bad part was being Windows updates behind! I too was recently re-installing Vista to a friends laptop, as they didn't have a valid key for the W7 it previously had before they fecked it :.
